BERAS International

BERAS International began as two European research projects, not as an organisation with something to sell. The first, running from 2003 to 2006 and led by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences with research partners in eight countries, studied forty organic farms around the Baltic Sea that kept a careful balance between livestock and land. The finding was striking: if the whole region farmed this way, agricultural runoff into the Baltic would would have a significant positive impact on climate change and biodiversity, and the region's 90 million people would still be fed. A second project, BERAS Implementation, ran from 2010 to 2013 under Södertörn University and turned that research into practice. It was here that Diet for a Green Planet took shape, developed with Södertälje municipality's meal service, which went on to raise the organic share of its 20,000 daily school meals past 60% without increasing their budget. All this with better food, not worse, as recognised when Södertälje was named Sweden's best school-meal municipality in 2016.

When the project funding ended, the work didn't. BERAS International was founded to carry it forward, not as a single idea, but as three concepts serving three different parts of the food system: Ecological Regenerative Production for those who grow, Diet for a Green Planet for those who cook and eat, and Sustainable Food Communities for those who plan and govern. Different audiences, one underlying logic: soil, food and society regenerate together, or not at all.

That work is rooted in Sweden but it doesn't stop there. Diet for a Green Planet has been taken up in Finland, Lithuania, Poland, Spain and India. BERAS runs courses with Stensunds Folkhögskola and with Novia University of Applied Sciences in Finland, and has helped build two international networks: the UN's Organic Food System Programme and the Global Alliance for Organic Districts. Ekodistrikt Sörmland, Sweden's first ecodistrict, grew directly out of that international work finding its way home.

BERAS operates by partnership, not by working alone. It acts as an expert others bring in, or as a partner inside larger EU-funded projects, working alongside universities, municipalities and international networks rather than delivering solutions from the outside. There's rarely a straight line from research to practice. What works is patient, practical, one step at a time, built with the people who actually grow the food and the people who cook and serve it. BERAS describes itself as non-hierarchical and systems-thinking, valuing co-creation and a diversity of perspectives in how it works with partners, and in how it keeps developing itself.
